Excellent Laptop for Creatives: Unleash Your Creativity

laptop for creatives

Are you looking for a laptop for creatives to help you unleash your creativity to the world? Look no further as we got you covered.  You might be asking yourself, “what right does this guy behind the keyboard have to teach me about creativity?” Well, let me share my story with you so you can see for yourself if I am qualified “enough” to warrant your time and give you recommendations.

I grew up wanting to be an architect and I graduated as that. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind as to architecture but you see today, I am a digital marketer as life doesn’t always go how you want it to. Besides my architecture degree, I am also a music producer privileged to have worked on some of the hits in the Nigerian music industry (I can’t name them because I signed a NDA).

I am a mixing and mastering engineer. I am an author of 5 self-published books on Amazon of which 1 is a best-seller in its category – this means I am a writer. In fact, I made my first million as a ghostwriter on Fiverr. I used to run a YouTube channel, which warranted me to dive into video editing.

Looking at the above interests of mine, they all have one thing in common – trial and error, which is a bedrock of creativity. Am I right or right?

It would interest you to know that while I know all of those things, I never paid attention to the laptops I was using. I was never a technology freak; I only needed it to do what I want and beyond that, everything else is “for your pocket.” It wasn’t until I became a digital marketer for Jumuah did I start putting technology in its rightful place.

In hindsight, I remember clearly some situations where I became enraged and frustrated because the laptop I was working with was slow or lagging. Creatives value being able to input a command and have it processed as quickly as possible. As a creative, every moment wasted is your muse disappearing and you don’t want that.

IMPORTANT FEATURES CREATIVES SHOULD LOOK FOR IN A LAPTOP

Therefore, you need a laptop that works at the speed and pace of your creativity. Here are a list of things I now find important for creatives when looking to buy a laptop:

Processor Type

As said previously, your laptop should move at the speed of your creativity. If you are into videography, architecture, content creation, or anything that requires speed, you should go for a laptop with a Core i7 processor. Needless to say, the Core i7 processor is the fastest we have technology wise presently. It is best suited for demanding tasks.

If you are into photography, graphic design, music production etc., the least processor you should have is a Core i5. The Core i5 processor is not as fast as the Core i7 but it will get the job done.

Memory

Without question, if you are into things that demand more computing power, then the least memory you should purchase should be 16GB RAM. This is to give you enough capacity to run your applications. The main function of your RAM is to run your applications. Whenever you open an application, it opens, runs and processes data in RAM.

One unknown fact about RAM sizes is that they also aid your laptop’s speed. The more RAM size you have, the faster your laptop processes inputs. Do you notice that when you use up all your RAM, your laptop starts slowing down? That’s exactly why you need more RAM size if your tasks are demanding and you run a lot of software’s/application together.

If your tasks aren’t that demanding, an 8GB RAM size is enough to run your applications smoothly. Furthermore, most students will be okay with a 4GB RAM if they only use their laptops for watching movies, reading, downloading PDF’s etc. You can’t do these things simultaneously. A HP Folio 9470m will meet most student laptop need but I digress.

Your RAM is where the commands you input get processed so you don’t want to get it wrong.

Storage Capacity

This is where your files are stored. For those with a demanding task, I recommend nothing less than 512GB Storage capacity.

If your tasks are less demanding, then go for 256GB SSD or 500GB HDD.

When I recommend HDD for some customer’s based on their needs, they always back away because of their perception. The problem is most of them confuse storage capacity with RAM. They mistake RAM size for the real laptop memory, which isn’t the case at all.

In some cases, you are better off with more storage capacity size, which the HDD provides, with a Core i5 processor, and an 8GB RAM – this combination will work for music production without problem. It would also work for photography.

AN IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATION TO ALL CREATIVES: Please buy an external hard drive to copy or move your files to as your storage capacity fills up. This has the added advantage of keeping your files safe while freeing up your laptop to store more files.

I would have added battery life but I didn’t. The reason is because the 3 features above are more important than battery life as a creative. Moreover, nobody goes to buy a laptop without checking for battery life or having decided on how to keep it charged to maximize their productivity – you can’t work without power.
